What do I need in order to adopt a pet?
To adopt a pet from Missaukee Humane Society, you must:
- Complete an adoption application.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Provide a valid photo ID.
- Have the knowledge, time, and resources necessary to care for a pet for its lifetime.
- If you rent, provide landlord approval confirming pets are allowed.
- Meet with the pet to ensure a good match for your family and lifestyle.
- Have all current pets up to date on vaccinations and properly cared for.
Our goal is to ensure every adoption is a successful, lifelong placement. Adoption applications are reviewed to help match pets with homes where they will thrive.

How can I foster a pet?
Fostering is one of the most rewarding ways to help animals in need. Foster homes provide temporary care for pets until they are ready for adoption or can move into the shelter.
Animals may need foster care for a variety of reasons, including:
- Recovery from illness or surgery
- Caring for orphaned kittens or puppies
- Providing a break from the shelter environment
- Socialization and basic training
- Special medical or behavioral needs
To become a foster caregiver, complete a foster application and work with our team to determine what type of foster opportunity is the best fit for your home and experience level.
Missaukee Humane Society provides guidance and support throughout the fostering process. Depending on the animal’s needs, we may also provide food, supplies, and veterinary care.
If you’re interested in fostering, contact us at (231) 839-3800 option 1 or complete a foster application through our website.
By opening your home to a pet in need, you’re helping save lives and creating space for us to help even more animals. 🐾❤️

What is the "Kid's Club"? How can I get involved?
Kids Club is Missaukee Humane Society’s humane education program designed to teach children about animal welfare, responsible pet ownership, kindness, compassion, and safety around animals.
What began as a small outreach effort has grown into a program serving more than 35 classrooms across four Northern Michigan counties. Through classroom visits, educational activities, and age-appropriate lessons, Kids Club helps children develop empathy for animals while learning important life skills.
There are several ways to get involved:
- Teachers and Schools: Invite Kids Club to your classroom or school.
- Volunteers: Assist with educational activities, events, and program support.
- Sponsors and Donors: Help expand the program by funding educational materials, classroom resources, and outreach efforts.
- Community Partners: Partner with us to bring humane education opportunities to more children throughout the region.
Whether you’re an educator, parent, volunteer, business owner, or community supporter, there are many ways to help Kids Club continue making a positive impact on children and animals alike.
To learn more about Kids Club or discuss partnership opportunities, contact Missaukee Humane Society at (231) 839-3800 option or visit the Kids Club page on our website. 🐾📚❤️
